The Perfect Work Shoe for Every Day of the Week
A Footwear Designer Dishes Her Top 5 Go-To Work Shoes
Sometimes it seems impossible to find the perfect work shoe. The cute ones are never comfortable enough to wear for a full 9 to 5, and the ones that are seem to compromise style for comfort. This leaves us with a grave choice selection: looking great and being uncomfortable, or being comfortable and looking shabby – not the best options when you are trying to excel in the workplace.
Luckily, we have some great friends in the footwear industry who know the perfect shoe for any occasion. We sat down with Footwear Designer Samantha Paterno of Clark’s Bostonian for the low down on her personal top 5 favorite work shoes. For one week, Sam catalogued the shoes she wore to work and provided suggestions for practical, work appropriate look-alikes at moderate price points.
1. Heeled Ankle Boot
Sam’s number one go-to work shoe is a simple, all black, heeled ankle boot by All Saints. The perfect versatile boot, this silhouette can be paired with anything from a long maxi dress, work trousers, or even casual jeans. These run at about $300 available at All Saints online store.
For a more affordable look-alike, at about $130, Sam suggests the ‘Spye Belle’ bootie by Clarks, available at Nordstrom.
2. Basic Pump
For those dressier days, a basic pump is your best friend. The classic style conveys confidence and professionalism, without compromising femininity. The key to comfort is keeping the heel lower than 4 inches (having a pair of flats in your desk drawer as backup doesn’t hurt either). Sam wears black patent leather, single sole, pointed toe Brian Atwood pumps. Available at Neiman Marcus, these pumps are $325.00.
Ivanka Trump and Kate Spade were Sam’s suggestions for comfortable patent leather pumps at lower prices points ($135 and $298 , respectively at Nordstorm).
3. Riding Boot
A comfortable and cozy go-to, especially for the impending winter season, the equestrian riding boot is a great way to incorporate a tall boot into a work appropriate look. Sam wears the ‘Mojito Crush’ boots by Clarks, available at Nordstrom for $300.
Enzo Angiolini’s ‘Seavon’ boot for $150 (now $130 on Nordstrom.com) is Sam’s suggestion for a less expensive, work appropriate riding boot.
4. Classic Flat
For those days when you just don’t feel like dressing up, it’s a good idea to have a simple and elegant flat in your closet. Flats go with just about any outfit and they are particularly great for prolonged wear (for those with high-arched feet, we suggest getting a sole insert like Dr. Scholl’s®). Sam wears Adam Tucker ‘Me Too’ slip ons, available at Nordstrom for about $90 (now on sale for $45, http://bit.ly/1fEBJcz).
Sam Edelman ($90) and Loeffler Randall ($250), both available at Nordstrom, are Sam’s work appropriate flat shoe recommendations.
5. Casual Friday Sneaker
For the lucky ones whose bosses actually abide to the “Casual Friday” rule, here are some great classic sneaks that tread the professional/casual line. Sam wears black distressed leather wedged sneakers with white outsoles by Ash, available at Bergdorf Goodman for $295.
Converse is a classic sneaker that goes with just about anything. For work, Sam suggests sticking with a classic color, like all white.
